IT'S MORE THAN MISSING YOU.
When Being Home Alone Feels Overwhelming.
For some dogs, being left alone isn't simply unpleasant. It can trigger genuine fear, panic and distress.
Dogs experiencing separation-related anxiety may bark or howl, pace, pant, drool, attempt to escape, become destructive or struggle to settle when their people leave. Some dogs show more subtle signs that are easy to miss.
These behaviors aren't acts of spite or disobedience. They're signs that your dog may be struggling to cope with separation.
At Four Leggers, we approach separation anxiety with compassion, patience and an individualized training plan designed to help your dog gradually feel more comfortable spending time alone.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Understanding the Journey to Comfortable Alone Time.
Why is separation anxiety training conducted virtually?
Separation anxiety training is most effective when we can observe your dog's natural responses to being alone. Virtual coaching allows us to work with your dog in their familiar home environment without a trainer's physical presence influencing their behavior. You'll receive personalized instruction and guidance throughout the process.
How long does separation anxiety training take?
Every dog progresses differently. Some dogs develop greater comfort with separation relatively quickly, while others need a longer period of gradual training. Our program is offered in month-long blocks, with individualized exercises and weekly reassessments to guide progress. We cannot guarantee a specific recovery timeline.
How much time do I need to dedicate to training?
Families should plan to dedicate approximately 30 minutes per day, five days per week, to their dog's training. Consistency is important, and we'll help you understand how to practice the exercises appropriately.
What if I have to leave my dog alone for work or errands?
An important part of separation anxiety training is avoiding absences that trigger significant distress while your dog develops greater comfort with being alone. We understand that this can require adjustments to your routine. During your assessment, we can discuss management options such as family assistance, trusted caregivers or other arrangements that may work for your dog.
Will my dog eventually be able to stay home alone?
Our goal is to help your dog gradually build comfort with separation and increase their ability to tolerate time alone. However, outcomes and timelines vary depending on each dog's individual needs, history and circumstances. We focus on sustainable progress rather than promising a specific result.
Should I let my dog bark or cry until they get used to being alone?
No. Our approach does not rely on allowing dogs to experience prolonged panic or distress. Instead, we use carefully planned, gradual departures designed to remain within your dog's current comfort threshold. Training progresses as your dog demonstrates readiness.
What happens during the initial assessment?
Your initial virtual assessment lasts approximately one hour. We'll discuss your dog's history and separation-related behaviors, observe their responses and identify an appropriate starting point. We'll also review the training process and what participation involves.
What does a typical training week include?
Each week includes five customized training missions. The fifth mission is a live reassessment, allowing us to review your dog's progress and adjust the following week's plan. Exercises are tailored to your dog's individual comfort level rather than following a predetermined schedule.
Does my dog need medication for separation anxiety?
Not every dog requires medication, but some may benefit from veterinary support alongside behavior modification. Medication decisions should be made with your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist. We can coordinate training goals with veterinary recommendations when appropriate.
How do I get started?
Begin by submitting our Separation Anxiety Assessment Request. We'll review your inquiry and contact you about the next steps. The initial assessment helps us understand your dog's needs and determine how to begin an individualized training program.
